Fish Cake, which is also known as Fish Patty is getting popularity in India now a days. It’s a simple and easy to make recipe, yet delicious and nutritious. It can be prepared with most of the available boneless fish fillets.

I have tried making Fish Cake in different styles and with different fishes. Here I will share the one which I found to be the best in preparation and taste. Additionally, the fish smell is considerably less in this dish.

In India, the choice of fish differs with geography. In eastern part, people loves fresh water fish, where south and western part loves sea fish. Due to the boom of online shopping now a days frozen sea fish is available anywhere in India. For this recipe, I have used frozen Basha fish.

Baha is a fresh water fish and also available all over the seasons. The main advantage with this fish that it can be filleted easily, takes less time to cook and has less fishy smell.

This particular Fish Cake goes really well with burger. It can be eaten separately with Honey Mustard sauce or Mayonnaise. Here is the complete recipe of Fish Cake.

INGREDIENTS

*1cup_250ml, *1tbsp._Tablespoon(15 ml) , *1tsp._Teaspoon(5 ml)

To make the fish cake

  • Fish fillet (Basa) – 300 gm
  • Bread Crumb – 1/2 cup
  • Chili flakes – 1 tsp
  • Black pepper – 1/2 tsp
  • Oregano – 1 tbsp
  • Lemon juice – 1 tsp
  • Coriander leaves – 1/4 cup
  • Green chili – 2 pieces
  • Chopped garlic – 1 + 1/2 tbsp
  • Butter – 3 tbsp

To fry or bake the fish cake

  • Vegetable/Olive Oil (For frying) – 2 tbsp

Notes

1. Try to use fresh fish fillet for the recipe. There is huge taste difference between frozen fish fillet and fresh fish fillet. Try with which one is available in your area.
 
2. If you are using Basa fish, be cautious about its cooking time. Basa has two advantages, it takes less time to cook and less time to get marinate also.  
 
3. The fish does have rich smell and own flavor. So it can be marinate, according to you own flavor and requirements.
 
4. You can use either food processor or blender to blend the fish along with the vegetables. Even you can finely chopped by using your big kitchen knife. For this you need some extra time and effort.
 
5. Although I have baked this Fish Cake, yet you can fry this on oil as well. For frying non-stick fry pan is recommended. 
 
6. I have given round shape to my fish cakes. You can give your own favorite shape to them.
 
7. It goes well with fresh salad and sauce. Even I have made Fish Petty Burger, using the same fish cake as a fish petty.

How to make fish cake

Step 1: First, take the fish fillets, wash them and cut them into small pieces. No size restriction as we are going to blend them anyway.

Step 2: Similarly, chop green chili, garlic cloves and coriander leaves as well. Try to finely chop them.

Step 3: Now, take out your food processor or blender and put fish, butter, salt and pepper inside it.

Step 4: Once veggies and fishes are blended properly, take them out in a mixing bowl. Now add the spices and chopped veggies in the mixture and mix them well using your hand. And finally add the bread crumb into the mixture.

Step 5: Take one portion from the mixture and make it a round ball. Then press from either side to give it a flatter surface like a patty. In my case, I have made 3 medium patty from my prepared mixture.

Tips: This mixture is usually very sticky in hands, washing hands in between or covering your palm with oil might save some of your effort.

Step 6: If you have time in hand, leave the patty aside for 1 hour of so. During this time the spices are absorbed properly into the fish and give your fish a richer taste.

Step 7: Once you are ready to bake, preheat your oven in convection mode at 180°C. Bush your baking tray with some oil and put you patty on it. Brush some oil over the patty as well.

Tips: Using less oil will drive out the moisture from your Fish Cake and will make it harder.

Step 8: Once ready, bake your Fish Cake for 30 minutes. In between flip them over once and add more oil if required.

Step 9: After 30 minutes, your Fish Cake is ready. Enjoy them with your favorite sauce. I hope you and your family are going to love it.
