To Activate the Yeast:
– 1/3 cup lukewarm water
– 1 tsp active yeast
– 1 tsp sugar
To Make the Dough:
– 1 cup all-purpose flour (Maida)
– 2 tsp butter
– 1/4 tsp salt
– 1 1/2 tbsp sugar
– 2 tbsp milk powder
– Activated yeast water (from above)
To Fill the Buns:
– 4 pieces chilled chocolate spread buttons
How to make chocolate steamed buns
1. Activate the yeast, in a small bowl, combine lukewarm water, active yeast, and 1 tsp of sugar. Mix well and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy. This indicates that the yeast is active.
2. To make the dough, in a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour (maida), salt, sugar, and milk powder.
3. Gradually add the activated yeast water to the dry ingredients. Mix the ingredients to form a dough. Here add 2 tsp of butter to it.
4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
5. Place the kneaded dough in the same bowl. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rest in a warm, draft-free place for about 1 hour or until the dough doubles in size.
6. Meanwhile, add 6 tablespoons of chocolate spread (Nutella) individually on a parchment paper and freeze for 1 hour.
7. Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down to release the air.
8. Divide the dough into 4 equal portions. Flatten each portion into a small circle and place a chilled chocolate spread button in the center.
9. Wrap the dough around the chilled chocolate button and seal it well, shaping it into a bun.
10. Place the prepared buns on individual parchment paper squares to prevent sticking.
11. Arrange the buns in a steamer basket/plate, leaving some space between them.
12. Steam the buns for about 25 minutes, maintaining a steady steam. Once done, carefully remove the buns from the steamer.
