Moong Dal Halwa

Moong Dal Halwa is a popular and traditional Indian dessert made from yellow moong dal (split and skinned green gram), ghee (clarified butter), sugar, and milk. It is a rich and indulgent sweet dish that is often prepared during special occasions, festivals, and celebrations.

Ingredients

1cup-240ml; 1tablespoon – 15ml; 1teaspoon – 5ml;

– Split skinned green gram (Moong dal) – ½ cup

– Almond (chopped) – 2 tbsp

– Green cardamom – 2 pods

– Lukewarm milk – 1 cup

– Water – ½ cup

– Sugar – ¼ cup

– Salt to taste

– Ghee – 2 tbsp


How to make Moong Dal Halwa

1. Preheat a pan, add split moong dal and fry for 5-10 minutes or until it turns slightly red. Keep it aside to cool properly.

2. Grind the roasted moong dal into a fine powder using a blender.

3. Chop the almonds into small pieces. Crush the green cardamom pods and extract the seeds. Grind the seeds into a fine powder.

4. Heat ghee in a heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat.

5. Add the ground moong dal and sauté it in ghee until it turns golden brown. Stir continuously to avoid lumps.

6. Slowly add lukewarm milk and water mix to the roasted moong dal powder while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens.

7. Add sugar to the mixture and continue to stir. Adjust the quantity of sugar based on your sweetness preference.

8. Add the chopped almonds and cardamom powder to the mixture. Mix well.

9. Keep cooking the halwa on low to medium heat until it reaches a thick, halwa-like consistency. Ensure that it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.

10. Add a pinch of salt to enhance the flavor. Stir well and cook for a few more minutes until the halwa leaves the sides of the pan.

11. Once the moong dal halwa reaches the desired consistency, remove it from heat.

12. Garnish with additional chopped almonds if desired. Serve the delicious Moong Dal Halwa warm. It can be enjoyed on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
