Moong Dal Khichdi is a healthy one pot meal. It is an Indian origin dish. Khichdi is a light meal, primarily made with rice and red lentil.
It is a easy and time saving dish which needs very less time to be prepared. Its primarily preferable in lunch. Its a good meal choice when you have less time to cook.
Although it takes less cooking time, it has sufficient nutrition to deliver the energy we need for a busy day.
For this particular recipe I have added some veggies into it. It enhances the flavor and adds some more nutrition value. There are some added spices as well, which further adds to the taste.
Personally, I prefer to use proper roasted veggies into my khichdi. I suggest you to follow the same, it enhances the taste.
In India, you can see numerous types of khichdi varieties, they all have a touch of the tradition of the place it belongs to.
Form this bucket of khichdi recipes, today I am going to share with you a east India famous one – Moong Dal Khichdi.
INGREDIENTS
1cup-240ml; 1tablespoon – 15ml ; 1teaspoon – 5ml;
- Rice – 1/2 cup
- Split mung beans ( moong dal) – 1/2 cup
- Beans (chopped) – 1/2 cup (in small dices)
- Carrot (chopped) – 1/2 cup (in small dices)
- Green chilies – 3 pieces
- Coriander leaves (chopped) – 1/4 cup
- Green peas – 1/4 cup
- Tomato – 1 small size
- Ginger paste – 1 tsp
- Cashew – 10 pieces
- Raisins – 10 pieces
- Bay leaves – 1 piece
- Dried red chili – 1 piece
- Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
- Coriander powder – 2+1/2 tsp
- Cumin powder – 1 tsp
- Red chili powder – 1/2 tsp
- Sugar – 1 tbsp.
- Salt – 1+1/2 tsp or use as your own taste
- Oil – 2 tbsp.
- Ghee (Clarified butter) – 1 tbsp.

- Deep Frying Pan or Kadai
- Pressure Cooker (Optional)

How to make Moong Dal Khichdi
Step 1: Firstly we have to chop carrot , green chilies and beans into small dices. After that wash them and keep aside. Similarly finely chop the coriander leaves.
Step 2 : Then add the rice and moong dal (split mung beans) into a preheated pan. Roast them without oil for 2-3 minutes on low flame.
Step 3 : Now, in the same pan Add 2 tbsp. of oil, then add 1 tsp of cumin seed, 1 dry red chili and 1 bay leave. Wait for cumin seed splutter.
Step 4: Now add chopped carrot and beans into the preheated oil and fry them for 3-4 minutes.
Step 5: Then add 1 tsp of ginger paste and at the same time add tomatoes into the pan. Fry them for 2 minutes on low flame. It helps the veggies to get cook evenly.
Step 6: Further add above all spices (coriander powder, red chili powder, cumin powder, sugar, salt) on it and roast them all for another 1-2 minutes.
Step 7: Add the rice and dal into the fry pan. Similarly roast them with the veggies and spices for 2-3 minutes.
Step 8: At this time add 3 cups of water in the pan and wait for boiling.
Tips: On the other hand, you can make it by using a normal pressure cooker. For this 1 whistle would be enough to cook the Moong Dal Khichdi properly.
Step 9: Put the lid on the pan and cook 20 -30 minutes on low flame. During the boiling add more water if you think it is getting more dry.
Step 10: Now switch off the gas and wait for 10 minutes to cool down. Your Moong Dal Khichdi is ready to be served.
