Steam Shrimp is a delicious dish from Indian cuisine. This recipe is made with some simple spices and shrimps.
For this recipe we need medium size peeled shrimps. shrimp, which translates to prawn, are also popularly known as chingri In many places of India.
There are varieties of shrimps available in market. They are different in size, shape, color and taste.
In this steam shrimp recipe, we will put raw shrimps directly into the gravy.
This recipe mainly belongs from West Bengal. In east part of India, people calls this steam shrimp recipe as ‘Bhapa chingri’ in local language.
Mustard and poppy seeds are the two main ingredients in this recipe.
Both ingredients are essential to make this recipe perfectly.
INGREDIENTS
1cup-240ml; 1tablespoon – 15ml ; 1teaspoon – 5ml;
Ingredients for steam shrimp gravy
- Shrimps (peeled) – 200gm
- Poppy seeds – 1/4 cup
- Mustard seeds (black) – 1½ tsp
- Green chili – 4 pieces
- Black cumin – 1/2 tsp
- Mustard oil – 2 tbsp.
- Salt – 1/2 tsp (for gravy)
- Water – 1 cup

- Salt – 1/2 tsp
- Turmeric – 1/4 tsp

How to make Steam Shrimp
Step 1: First of all we need to wash the shrimps and then marinate them with ½ tsp of turmeric and ½ tsp of salt. Let it rest for 15 minutes for marinate.
Step 2: Meanwhile take the mentioned amount of mustard seeds, poppy seeds and green chilies. Then make a thick paste using a mixer grinder.
Tips: On the other hand you can soak them (mustard and poppy seeds) for 2-3 minutes to get a smooth and thick paste.
Step 3: Now put 2 tbsp. of mustard oil into a preheated pan. At the same time add 1/2 tsp of black cumin seeds to it.
Wait for cracking.
Step 4: At this point add the paste of mustard seed, poppy seed and green chili into the oil. Then mix them and roast them for 2 minutes on low flame.
Tips: Don’t roast them more then that. Otherwise it will be bitter in taste.
Step 5: Add 1 cup of water at that time into the pan. Cook the gravy for 5 minutes on low flame.
Step 6: Now add the marinated shrimps in the gravy and cook for 5 minutes. In addition put a lid on it during cooking.
Step 7: However I made this steam shrimp with semi-gravy. But you can add more water as per your requirement.
Step 8: Now your delicious steam shrimp is ready to be served. In India this is best combo with hot rice. I hope you like it.
